Also known as: Jupiter’s nuts, Carya, Eastern black walnut, American walnut.

The black walnut is a resident of North America, but it may have also been a native of Persia. The leaves and bark of this tree are used to make herbal remedies.

The bark does contain poisonous compounds and should be handled very carefully. It adapts well to new locations because it produces a toxin that interferes with the growth of other plants in the surrounding area, making it the dominate species.

This toxin is called “juglone” and is found in the roots, buds and nut hulls of the tree.
