Licorice Extract

Species Name: Glycyrrhiza glabara

Also Known As: Licorice Root, Liquorice, Yasti Madhu, Sweet Licorice, Kuo-lao, Chinese Licorice, Sweet Wood, Mi-kan, Gan Cao

What is licorice extract? Licorice extract is the extract from the licorice plant, a plant found in various parts of both Europe and Asia. Often used as a flavoring for candies, licorice is a strong extract known for providing a wealth of health benefits.

Home Remedies Using Licorice Extract:

Benefits of Licorice Extract:

Licorice is full of various chemicals that are helpful to the body, including Gycyrrhizinc acid. This particular acid helps the body to fight various illnesses that may occur in the body, including the flu and the common cold.

The plant also produces interferon, a chemical that actually helps to boost the immune system.

Licorice extracts are also considered strong anti-allergenic agents, helping those with severe allergies to reduce and control their symptoms. Licorice extract may be able to help those suffering from strong coughs and fevers that stem from these allergies, as well as potential conjunctivitis and asthma.

Licorice extract also has a positive effect on the entire respiratory system, helping to provide relief for those suffering from a wide range of inflammations and agitations.

This includes asthma, coughing, chest infection, and other respiratory infections. Strong against the common cold and flu, licorice extract acts as an expectorant to remove phlegm from the lungs.

The product has been known to help heal ulcers, helping to lower the stomach acid levels that can wreck havoc on the stomach and body. It is also known for helping women get through menopause, reducing the symptoms of this particular bodily change.

Side Effects of Licorice Extract:

Those who suffer from high blood pressure are advised to stay away from licorice extract use, as the product may actually raise blood pressure.

High amounts of licorice can be somewhat toxic, known to be detrimental to the liver and to the cardiovascular system. Hypertension is another possible symptom for those who take in high concentrations and doses of the extract.

Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding are advised to stay away from licorice extracts. While we still fail to completely understand the effects of the herb on the unborn child, there are some beliefs that it can affect the behavior of the child once the child is born.
