Lemon Peel Extract

Species Name: Citrus Limon

Also Known As: Lemon or Citron.

The Lemon tree is believed to be native to the Mediterranean area. It has been cultivated and grown world-wide, in hot houses or enclosed gardens if it won’t grow outside.

This citrus fruit is tangy, acidic and is used for culinary purposes. Because of their high vitamin C content, lemons were historically used on long sea voyages to combat scurvy.

Lemon juice was used in the late 1600s as a way to redden women’s lips and is still used in some modern lip glosses.

What is Lemon Peel Extract? Lemon Peel extract comes from the fresh lemon peel. The outermost layer is the part of the peel that is used to make the herbal tinctures or extracts of Lemon Peel.

Taken internally, Lemon Peel extract provides an excellent source of bioflavanoids and vitamin C.

Traditionally this supplement has been used to stimulate appetite, as a flavor and fragrance enhancer, and to treat digestive disorders.

Today Lemon Peel extract is also seen as a treatment for gastrointestinal disorders, phlebitis, vascular disorders, and capillary fragility, and as a treatment for cellulite. It is believed to have antibiotic abilities.

Lemon peel extract or herbal tinctures come in a concentrated liquid form or capsule.

Topically Lemon extract in an oil or tincture form is used as an antiseptic, astringent, and antibiotic. It can be used externally to treat acne, cellulite and other skin disorders.

There are new studies being done on limonene which is a monoterpene found in lemon, orange and grapefruit peel. These studies have shown, “It effectively prevents individuals from developing abnormal growths on their skin.

Limonene also has demonstrated prevention efficacy in preclinical models of breast and colon abnormal growths.

A recent case-controlled study of an Arizona population found that lemon peel consumption is common. 34.7 percent of all subjects reporting citrus peel use had significant protection against abnormal growths of the skin.

Side Effects of Lemon Peel Extract:

Lemon peel contains a derivative called coumarin.

High dosages of this substance may cause photosensitization in people exposed to high levels of UV rays (sun or tanning beds). This is especially true for those people with fair skin.
