Snoring

Snoring is a common and sometimes serious problem with adults. The causes can range from congestion to obesity, or a blockage in the nasal passages. The noise we hear is the vibration of the soft palate as air is inhaled through a relaxed airway. The rough fluttering noise we hear is produced when the lungs strain for oxygen. Some people may only snore when they have a cold or are suffering from allergies, but for others it is an every night occurrence that can contribute to daytime fatigue for both the sufferer and his or her spouse.

Some home remedies are available for simple snoring, but those who have a serious problem with it, need to consult with their doctor. It can sometimes be a symptom or warning of a serious medical condition. Sleep apnea, for example may be the cause of snoring loudly and awaking suddenly. If you have trouble breathing through your nose during the day, this may be indicative of a nasal blockage. Some serious cases may require surgery to correct.

Home Remedies for Snoring:

Roll Over:

Some people only snore while they are lying on their backs. The solution to this is to simple roll over. Ask a loved one to give you a gentle nudge if you should begin snoring so that you can roll over on your side.

Stop Smoking and Drinking:

Stop smoking and drinking both of which promote snoring. Alcohol causes relaxation of the muscles that keep airways open, thus causing the creation of distress for the lungs

Weight Loss:

Lose weight if you are overweight. Obesity is one of the biggest causes of snoring. Don’t eat right before bed because that relaxes muscles that are needed for proper breathing.

Shrink Pillows:

Sleeping with large pillows encourages snoring, where sleeping without a pillow will create a clearer airway and reduces snoring.

Cold Cures:

Sneezing during the day and snoring at night are signs that your snoring is due to congestion because of the sneezing. Try taking an antihistamine or nasal decongestant at night or try inhaling steam or sleeping with a vaporizer in order to relieve congestion before bedtime.

Elevation:

To alleviate snoring, elevate the upper portion of your bed with some planks of wood or bricks. You want to elevate your entire upper torso, not just your head, thus the reason for raising the entire upper part of your bed.

Avoid sedatives and sleeping pills as these relax the muscles around your neck that contribute to snoring.

Nasal Strips:

Nasal strips that you buy at the drugstore might also help. These do not help those who snore through their mouths.
