Problems Getting to Sleep

An occasional problem getting to sleep can be overcome fairly easily but an ongoing sleep disorder can be very unhealthy and even dangerous.

It isn’t normal to feel groggy and un-rested during the day because of sleep problems at night.

If you don’t get enough sleep your emotional balance, ability to handle stress, energy levels, attention span, productivity and ongoing health can be affected. Tired or fatigued individuals are more like to be involved in accidents.

You can learn what works for you in order to get better sleep. Start by creating a sleep diary in which you record your symptoms and sleep patterns. This will help you see what natural remedies help you achieve a great night’s sleep.

Natural Remedies With Problems Getting to Sleep:

Don't Let Sleep Elude You:

Don't let sleep elude you, have a comfortable room to lay down at night. Make sure your mattress and pillow are comfy. Keep the room cool and dark. No phones. If there is any noise that disrupts your sleep, wear ear plugs.

Keep it Routine:

One of the best natural remedies to help with problems getting to sleep is to develop a pre-bedtime routine. Simple is best. Shower, wash your face, or take a warm bath. Brush your teeth and lay out the things you need for the next day.

If you keep to a regular sleep schedule and go to bed and get up at the same time each day it will help your body clock recognize that it is time to rest.

Relaxation Techniques:

Get in bed in a relaxed position and focus on your body’s sensations. Make relaxation the goal by concentrating on each area of the body and consciously relaxing that specific part. Start with your toes, feet, ankles, calves, etc and move up. Take deep breaths during this time and leave your eyes closed.

Herbal Teas:

Herbal teas that contain chamomile, passion flower, and lemon balm will help you sleep as all three herbs are effective sleep aids. Honey also has sleep inducing properties and can be added to the tea. Lavender tea might also work for you or one of the natural combinations sold in health and grocery stores.

Lavender:

Get a natural lavender scent that you can lightly spray on your bed linens. The scent of lavender has long been used as an aid to sleep. Lavender oil, lavender sachets, and lavender air fresheners might also help. Lavender massage oil will help relax muscles and the scent will aid in sleep, as will lavender oil in a hot bath.

Melatonin:

Melatonin can be a powerful sleep aid alone or in combination with other supplements. Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone that is produced by your body at night to help regulate the sleep-wake cycle.

When it works for people it works very well. But there are some people who it won’t work for. It is especially effective if you have a natural tendency to go to bed and get up later than what is considered normal.
