Yohimbe is a West African evergreen tree whose bark has traditionally been used by the natives as an aphrodisiac.

What is Yohimbe Extract? Yohimbe extract comes from the bark of the West African Pausinystalia yohimbe evergreen tree.

The active chemical ingredient that is present in yohimbe bark is yohimbine HCl, an indole alkaloid. Yohimbine hydrochloride in standardized form is a prescription drug available in the United States.

Important note: When shopping for Yohimbe extract you need to understand that the terms yohimbine, yohimbine hydrochloride, and yohimbe bark extract are related, but are not interchangeable.

The level of yohimbine varies in different yohimbe bark supplements. Sometimes these levels can be very low so check the label.

Yohimbe extract with high levels of yohimbine is an effective treatment for both male impotence and female hyposexual disorder. It is known to boost sexual interest or libido in women and helps battle erectile dysfunction in men.

Yohimbe extract can increase saliva in order to combat dry mouth caused by medications. It is believed to help inhibit platelet aggregation, and may help lower standing blood pressure and other autonomic nervous system dysfunctions.

Yohimbe bark extract must be avoided during pregnancy and breast feeding. It may relax the uterus and could be toxic to the fetus. There have been reports of deaths in children due to Yohimbe use during breastfeeding.
