Leucine (Iso Leucene)

Scientific Name:  (S)-2-amino-4-methyl-pentanoic acid (C6H13NO2).

Other Names:  Isoleucine, Iso Leucine.

One of the twenty most common amino acids found in proteins, leucine is an essential amino acid for humans, meaning that the human body cannot produce it naturally.

As the most common amino acid in protein, it is essential for growth and development during infancy and early childhood, as well as to maintain nitrogen equilibrium in adults.

Origin of Leucine: Leucine can be found in whole grains, eggs, milk products, soybeans, leafy vegetables, and meat sources high in protein, such as beef, pork, and chicken.

Sources of Leucine: Leucine supplements can be found in powdered whey protein and other protein powder mixes, as well as in pills.

The daily recommended dosage is approximately 16mg per kg of body weight per day (about 7mg per pound).

That is approximately 1,120mg daily for a male weighing 70 kilograms (150-160 pounds).

Home Remedies using Leucine:

Benefits and Uses of Leucine:

Leucine is credited with the ability to maintain muscles through the equalization of synthesis and breakdown of proteins.

Leucine can prevent muscle loss more effectively than many similar substances because it breaks down and is converted to glucose more quickly than other amino acids.

In bodybuilding and weightlifting in general, leucine is popular as a supplement to keep the body from catabalizing muscle during intense workouts by providing the body with additional glucose to fuel the effort.

Some athletes use protein powders that contain leucine to promote muscle recovery.

Leucine is also important in the maintenance of blood sugar levels.  Regulation of blood sugar can prevent hypoglycemia.

Leucine is also a great substance in promoting the healing of bones, skin, and muscle tissue resulting from traumatic injury or surgery.

Side Effects of Leucine:

Excessive intake of leucine supplements has not shown consistent toxicity in humans but can lead to pellagra (deficiency in niacin and the protein containing the essential amino acid tryptophan) and increase in ammonia within the body.

Pellagra can lead to dermatitis, diarrhea, and mental disorders.  Impaired liver or kidney function can also be caused by an extreme excess in leucine ingestion.
