Pets

Anyone who has ever loved a dog or cat can tell you that our pets, live with us, and become treasured, beloved members of our families. Home remedies exist for most mild illnesses, irritants, and injuries our pets get, but it is important to know that home cures for humans do not necessarily work, and may be harmful to your pet.

Home Remedies For Pets:

Pets And Over The Counter Medications For Humans:

Tylenol, Ibuprofen, or Aleve, should never be given to your dog or cat, but over the counter medications may be used as home cures for some pet ailments. Buffered aspirin or baby aspirin may be given to dogs twice a day at a rate of one tablet per 60 pounds of dog weight. Benedryl may be given at a rate of 1 mg. per pound of cat or dog, twice a day, to relieve itching, allergies, or insect stings. Another home remedy that works extremely well for both our furry friends, AND their owners, is the application of a paste of meat tenderizer and water on a wet cloth, to draw out the venom of an insect sting.

Nausea And Vomiting:

Dogs with nausea and vomiting can benefit from one teaspoon of Pepto Bismol per 20 pound of dog, every six hours. **not recommended for cats.** If you know your dog or cat has ingested poison, and you should induce vomiting, a natural remedy is to give the animal one tablespoon of 3% hydrogen peroxide for every 10 pounds of animal, up to three times, every 10 minutes, until vomiting occurs.

Constipation:

A natural cure for constipation in dogs and cats is mineral oil. Dogs can take up to four tablespoons a day, and cats can take up to two tablespoons a day.

Animals in Estrus (Heat):

A natural remedy that will aid in keeping animals in estrus from attracting potential mates, is to put a mentholated vapo rub on the female’s tail and rear flanks, and under the noses of your male animals.

Dry Skin:

The natural cure for dry skin in pets, is one Tablespoon of vegetable oil on dry pet food, to ease the discomfort of dry skin, and add luster to their coats.

Flea Infestation:

A great home remedy to repel fleas and ticks from pets, is the addition of brewer’s yeast and strong garlic to their food to repel fleas before they take up residence in your pet’s coat.

Hot Spots:

A natural cure for hot spots is a solution of one cup of water, in which a tea bag has been steeped (throw the tea bag away) two adult aspirins and one tablespoon of rubbing alcohol, dissolved and cooled. Trim the hair from around the spot, and blot with a cotton ball soaked in the mixture, followed by a bit of hydrocortisone cream.
