Herniated Disk

A herniated disk (sometimes misspelled as herniated disc)is a condition that affects the components of the spine known as inter-vertebral disks.

The spine is made up of 24 small pieces of bone known as vertebrae, which are separated from each other by means of these inter-vertebral disks.

Each inter-vertebral disk is made up of a tough outer ring that is fibrous that contains a soft inner portion.

In the case of a herniated disk, the fibrous outer ring tears and the soft inner portion protrudes out from that tear.

The bulging inner portion often presses against a nerve running from the spine, causing excruciating pain.

Even if it does not press against a nerve, the tear in the fibrous layer results in the release of inflammatory chemical mediators that can still cause severe pain.

Herniated disks are usually caused by constant lifting of heavy objects, or, to a lesser extent, tasks that require a lot of sitting.

The quickest way to get a herniated disk is to lift objects while bent over at the waist, instead of squatting and lifting while your back is straight.

When lifting with the back bent instead of straight, the pressure on a disc can increase to almost 20 times the normal pressure.

The main symptom of a herniated disk is usually a mild to severe back pain, radiating from the neck or lower back to the particular area.

Other symptoms include numbness, paralysis, muscular weakness, tingling, and affection of the reflexes.

Natural Cures for a Herniated Disk:

Here are some home remedies to help get rid of the pain..

Ice or Heat Treatment:

Depending on what is most effective for you, you can apply either ice or heat packs to the affected area, helping to soothe and provide relief from the pain.

Be sure not to keep either ice or heat packs on the skin for too long. You should apply for up to ten minutes, followed by at least ten minutes of rest.

Anti-Inflammatory Medication:

Anti-inflammatory drugs are available over-the-counter that are designed to reduce the swelling of the herniated disk and relieve some of the pressure that it puts on the spinal nerves.

General painkillers are also useful in controlling the pain.

Neck Support Pillow:

Back posture is one of the most important factors when it comes to a herniated disk, and the right pillow to sleep on can do wonders to relieve you of the constant pain.

Take a look in health stores for pillows designed specially for people who are suffering from back pain.
