Also known as: Black ginger, Canton ginger, Cochin ginger, Common ginger, Garden ginger, Gingembre, Imber, Jamaican ginger, Zingiber officinale.

What is Ginger: Ginger is a tropical plant. It grows in most hot, wet areas as a small bush about four feet tall. The actual ginger is taken from the root of the plant.

Ginger is tan to a dark brown color, for cooking it can be used fresh and powdered.

Ginger is mostly used as a flavoring for food. Ginger may be taken orally in higher amounts as an herbal remedy to prevent or relive nausea resulting from chemotherapy, motion sickness, pregnancy and surgery.

There have been many studies with this herb, as well as studies conducted among sailors that used ginger to help with seasickness. Ginger also has been shown to help people that have motion sickness more then any kind of placebo.

Ginger can also be used to help with nausea due to pregnancy and there have been no ill effect caused by it use. This should be discussed with your doctor to decide if this is a remedy you may want to use during your pregnancy.

Ginger has been used in folk medicine to help with problems such as gas or stomach cramps.

Another traditional use for ginger is the use for the pain of toothaches. Ginger can also be used in combination of herbs to help other problems.

Ginger mixed with feverfew can relieve a migraine headache. Most of the other traditional uses can't be full proven by studies.

You can find fresh ginger, dried ginger powder; this will be in capsules, also in liquid extracts and in syrups.

Side Effects of Ginger

Sometimes there might be a tingle feeling in the mouth and a chance of diarrhea. To lessen any effects make sure that you use a small dose, four grams at the most.

Using small amount in foods will not interact with any other drugs you might be taking. But you should check with your doctor if you are using large amounts of ginger.
