Angelica

Species Name:  angelica sylvestris.

Also known as: Garden Angelica. Archangelica officinalis.

Angelica can grow up to 7 feet tall. It has bright green leaves that surround a  hollow, reddish-purple stem. It produces a fruit that is aromatic and has a pleasant taste.

Angelica is a medicinal plant believed to have originated from Syria. According to folklore it is said to protect against contagion, purify the blood and cure every conceivable malady.

The roots, leaves, stem and seeds of the plant are used for medicinal purposes as well as for flavorings and as a sugar substitute.  It can be taken in powder form, tea, tinctures, tablets and capsules.

This plant has been used in China for thousands of years for women suffering with abnormal and/or severe menstrual issues. In addition, menopausal women were given angelica to relieve hot flashes and other symptoms.
