Peppermint Leaf Extract

Species name: Mentha piperita

Also Known As: Mint, brandy mint, curled mint, balm mint, lamb mint

Peppermint leaf extract is derived from the leaves of the peppermint plant. Quality products will only contain the extract from the leaves, but other products may also use the stems and the root. Peppermint is a common plant, found throughout the world.

There are various subspecies of the plant, but most of the nutritional benefit from the plant is found throughout all of the species. The use of peppermint leaf extracts dates back to the first century A.D. when it was used by the Roman and documented as such by Pliny. It was used throughout the Middle Ages, too, for its unique taste but also for its medicinal benefits.

Benefits and Uses of Peppermint Leaf Extract:

Peppermint leaf extract can provide a wide range of benefits for healthy. It is an excellent option for the treatment of indigestion and works to reduce flatulence. It is also an effective treatment for bad breath and has long been used as a treatment for the hiccups. However, as one of the world’s oldest remedies, there are many other uses for it.

The extract from this plant is most noted for its ability to promote healthy digestion. It is said to improve the appetite, aid in providing relief from indigestion and helps to dissolve gas. To work, the peppermint interacts with the stomach muscles, helping them to relax while also working to reduce the acidity in the stomach.

It works to stimulate the stomach to create bile, which is then used to help digest foods faster and better. It is said that the extract is beneficial specifically for those who have Crohn’s disease.

In addition to these treatments, peppermint leaf extracts can also aid in relieving pain from menstrual cramps, anxiety, nervous agitation and respiratory ailments. In addition to this, the extract is an effective antiseptic, and due to its antibacterial properties, it is ideal for treating main ailments as a topical treatment. Use it as a mouthwash (diluted with water) and as a treatment for bad breath.

Side Effects from Peppermint Leaf Extract:

Some people may experience negative reactions to peppermint leaf extracts, especially those who have gallbladder disorders, heartburn difficulties or those who are taking medications for heart related treatments. Those who are pregnant or nursing should not use a supplement like this without first discussing it with their doctor.
