Maitake Mushroom Extract

Species Name: Grifola frondosa

Also Known As: Hen of the Woods, Sheep’s head, ram’s head, maitake, dancing mushroom

The maitake mushroom grows in small clusters usually at the bottom of trees. It is a standard mushroom in that it can be eaten whole cooked or uncooked, safely.

It is a native plant to North America as well as Japan. It is considered one of the best mushrooms for use in Japanese and Chinese herbology.

Commonly known as the king of the mushrooms in Japan, because it can grow as large as 50 pounds, it is a popular option in culinary cuisine and for medicinal use.

Maitake mushrooms themselves have been used in ancient medicinal treatments for thousands of years. The use of maitake mushroom extracts have also become quite popular, specifically for those in alternative medicine fields.

The medicinal benefits of this extract are well known in these medicines, but are less well documented in traditional science, though research on them continues.

In traditional Chinese and Japanese medicines, the underground tubers of this plant were used. In these cases, it was used to improve and enhance the immune system. Taken as a way to get well but also to protect the immune system.

Some research does indicate that the maitake mushroom extract does work as a tool in regulating blood pressure and insulin.

It is able to help those who are diabetic to manage glucose levels in the blood. Further, some research indicates that it can help to regulate liver lipids and serum, including reducing cholesterol and managing phospholips and triglycerides.

Some studies also indicate that the mushroom extract is a good option for weight loss, though further research is needed.

One thing is known that the mushrooms themselves are a big source of nutrition. They contain calcium, potassium and magnesium, as well as the vitamins B2, D2 and niacin. They are also rich in amino acids and fiber. Some of these nutrients may be found in the extract as well.

As a food, there are few or no known side effects to consuming these mushrooms. The extracts, when sold in their pure form, are also safe for most people to use.
