Tangerine

Also known as: Tangerine essential oil is extracted from Citrus reticulata (also known as Citrus nobilis, C. madurensis, C. unshiu and C. deliciosa) of the Rutaceae family.  It is also known as European mandarin, tangerine, naartjie and true mandarin.

Tangerine essential oil is native to China, but was later taken to Europe, then made its way to America, with the end result being that America is a leading producer of tangerine essential oil. 

The major difference in tangerines and mandarins is harvest time.  Tangerines are harvested later in the year than mandarins.

Benefits of Tangerine Essential Oil

The therapeutic properties of essential tangerine oil are plentiful and varied. Tangerine oil is of great benefit to stop the spasmodic action that causes vomiting and diarrhea.

It is a powerful way to clean and disinfect cuts, wounds, and abrasions.  It helps relieve gas, boosts circulation, and helps reduce excess water weight. Tangerine essential oil is a great way to help minimize stretch marks, boost circulation, and aid in digestion.

  • Tangerine essential oil, used in aromatherapy, can be used in a diffuser, simmer pot, or steam therapy.
  • Tangerine oil may be blended with other essential oils and/or added to a carrier oil to be used as massage oil. 
  • A few drops can be added to a bath for a therapeutic soak.  Or added to water used to cleanse a wound for its antiseptic values.
  • Tangerine oil may be added to lotion or cream bases to help prevent stretch marks, increase circulation, and reduce water retention.

Side Effects of Tangerine Essential Oil

Tangerine essential oil is non-toxic, non-irritant and non-sensitizing, but it is a known phototoxic agent. 

Phototoxicity has been associated with tangerine oil, when it is used prior to exposure to the sun, so exercise caution when you have used tangerine oil prior to exposure to real or artificial sunlight.
