Coriander

Species name: Coriander oil is extracted from Coriandrum sativum of the Umbelliferae (Apiaceae) family.

Also known as: Coriander is also known by the names coriander seed and chinese parsley.

Coriander essential oil has a spicy, warm smell.  It ranges in color from practically clear to light yellow.  It has a thin, water-like texture. 

Coriander is an annual plant that is native to Morocco.  The plant forms green seeds when the flowers fall off, and these seeds have been used as an aphrodisiac all the way back into ancient history. 

Coriander seeds were even found in Tutankhamen’s tomb. 

Corriander was also used in Greece and Rome to flavor wine, and used in cooking even today.  It is still used today in certain liquor.

Benefits of Coriander Essential Oil:

The essential oil of coriander is still used in aromatherapy as well as a broad range of reasons.  It is still believed to energize when used in aromatherapy and fights tiredness. 

It is considered a carminative beneficial to the digestive system.  It relieves muscle and joint pain, while it warms and calms the digestive system, relieves rheumatism and arthritic pain, muscular spasms and detoxifies the body.

The therapeutic properties of coriander oil are pain relieving, enhancing sexual prowess, prevents intestinal and colon spasms, helps aid in digestion, helps alleviate nausea and vomiting, and kills fungus. 

It’s soothing and helps curtain rheumatism and arthritis pain, as well as muscle spasms and helps alleviate colds and flu. It is also a general bodily cleanser and flushes out toxins from the body.

  • Coriander essential oil can be used in vapor therapy. It can promote quick thought processes and alleviate tiredness while giving an appetite to users.  Vapor therapy can include simmer pots, steam inhalation, and may be added to a steamy bath.
  • Used in a bath, or as massage oil, it can aid in digestion, ease joint and muscle pain in the body, including muscle spasms.  It also promotes sweating, thus cleansing the body.
  • As an ingredient in creams and lotions, coriander oil helps ease tension and tiredness.  It helps get rid of migraines and muscle spasms, and bodily aches and pains in joints and surrounding areas.  It should be used with care, as it can be an irritant to the skin.

Coriander oil blends efficiently with other essential oils such as neroli, ginger and lemon essential oil.

Side Effects of Coriander Essential Oil:

There are no known specific side effects associated with Coriander essential oil, but it has been known to cloud mental clarity in large doses.
