Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, or GERD, affects an estimated 5% to 7% of the global population. Despite it being so common, it is often misunderstood and goes untreated. Serious health problems can occur if it is not treated properly. Persistent heartburn is the most common symptom of GERD, and the disease may be present with no symptoms at all.

GERD is a chronic disease, and even after symptoms have been brought under control, treatment must be continued on a long-term basis to prevent serious damage and health problems.

Home Remedies for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease:

Diet:

Diet and lifestyle modification remains the cornerstone of managing your GERD. Your goal should be to prevent the problem by keeping stomach contents where they belong, and staying away from foods that loosen the lower esophageal sphincter.

Large meals remain in the stomach for a much longer time than smaller meals. The longer it takes to digest the meal, the more likely it is that you will suffer GERD symptoms. Distribute your daily food consumption over three to six small meals a day.

Relax when you eat. Stress increases the production of stomach acid, so make meals a pleasant, relaxing experience. Sitting down, chewing completely, and eating slowly decreases the likelihood of developing GERD symptoms.

Remain upright after eating for at least three hours. Relax for a while, and avoid bending, and lifting heavy objects.

Avoid eating within three hours before you go to bed.

Weight Loss:

Losing weight, if you are heavy, can help reduce the symptoms of GERD. Avoid tight clothing or belts that put undue pressure on your stomach.

Gum:

Chewing gum increases production of saliva, which soothes the esophagus, and swallowing washed acid back down into the stomach.

Raise The Bed:

Raising the head of your bed approximately six inches can help as well.

Apple Cider Vinegar:

The most effective natural cure for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease seems to be pure, unpasteurized, natural apple cider vinegar. Taking 2 Tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in water three times a day or a stronger mixture (more vinegar, less water) directly after a heavy meal, or if you feel symptoms of GERD, will free you from the symptoms of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease.
