Lysine
Supplements - Amino Acids

Lysine

Scientific Name:  (S)-2,6-Diaminohexanoic acid (C6H14N2O2).

Other Names:  L-lysine.

Lysine is one of twenty amino acids readily found in most proteins and can act as a donor in hydrogen bonding, similarly to arginine and histidine.

It is an essential amino acid, meaning it cannot be naturally produced in the human body, which requires approximately 1-1.5 grams daily.

Origin of Lysine:  Lysine is limited in cereal grains but plentiful in all pulses (legumes) as well as fish.  Carob, watercress, soybeans, lentil beans, coriander, and spinach are all high in lysine content.

Cod and sardines are the greatest fish sources of lysine.

Home Remedies using Lysine:

Benefits and Uses of Lysine:

Lysine is usually sold as a supplement in L-lysine form and can be found as pills in capsules or tablets, creams, and liquids.

Dosage for an adult is recommended to be approximately 12mg per kg of body weight per day (about 5-6mg per pound).

For children, dosages increase, with newborns requiring about 100mg per kg of body weight daily (about 45mg per pound).

Lysine is important in the production of hydroxylysine, which is present in collagen.

L-lysine also plays an important part in the body’s production of enzymes, hormones, and antibodies, as well as the absorption of calcium and the building of muscular protein.

Some claim that lysine dietary supplements may be of benefit to those with herpes simplex infections, though these claims are not backed with sufficient evidence.

It is a necessary part of recovery after surgery and major muscular sports injuries.

Some forms of lysine may also relieve migraines and menstrual cramps and can be used as anti-inflammatory medications following an episiotomy (cutting of the vaginal area to enlarge the opening during labor and delivery).

Side Effects of Lysine:

While there is no proof of dangerous side effects caused by lysine supplementation in humans, some study in animals have shown the usage to increase levels of cholesterol and triglycerides.

Individuals with cardiovascular disease or at risk due to elevated levels of cholesterol and triglycerides should consult a doctor for approval of usage.
