Glutamine

Scientific Name:  (2S)-2-amino-4-carbamoyl-butanoic acid (C5H10N2O3).

Other Names:  Gln, Q.

Glutamine is one of the twenty amino acids that is considered the most common and is encoded by the standard genetic code.

It is important as a constituent of proteins and is crucial for the metabolizing of nitrogen.

Origin: Glutamine is produced naturally and is found in many foods high in protein, such as fish, red meat, dairy products, and beans.

Sources of Glutamine: Glutamine is often provided as a supplement in powder or pill form.

It is frequently found in protein mixes used for athletic supplementation to be included in “protein shakes”, as well as in energy bars and other dietary supplements.

Capsules containing glutamine may also be found in health food and supplement stores.

Home Remedies using Glutamine:

Benefits and Uses of Glutamine:

The main dietary use of glutamine is for the replenishment of the body’s supply of amino acids that may have been used throughout the day during exercise and every day activities.

Glutamine should be used as a supplement after prolonged periods of exercise which deplete the supply of amino acids in the body.

It is also beneficial for individuals who are fasting, have immune deficiencies, suffer from cancer, or who have experienced physical trauma.

Glutamine is often used as a supplement in bodybuilding, weightlifting, endurance sports, and for those who suffer from muscle pain and cramping, especially the elderly.

Glutamine has recently been discovered to aid in several aspects of gastrointestinal functionality, including:

  • intestinal cell proliferation
  • differentiation
  • the reduction of both septic morbidity and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Glutamine is often prescribed after surgery for a reduction in healing time, especially after abdominal operations.

Side Effects of Glutamine:

While glutamine is still being studied extensively to determine if there is a level of overdose capability, there are currently no known negative side effects of glutamine supplementation.
