Upset Stomach

What is an upset stomach? An upset stomach is a feeling of nausea or indigestion that can come from many sources. You can have an upset stomach because of something you ate, stress, motion sickness, or from some illness such as the flu.

One of the most common causes of upset stomach comes from eating or drinking too much and being full. This can cause nausea, heartburn, bloating, belching, and a general feeling of unease in your stomach.

Because there are so many different causes and symptoms it is difficult to identify a single natural remedy that covers everything.

Because an upset stomach can be caused by so many different things it might be necessary to try several remedies before you find one that works for you, each and every time you have an upset stomach.

An upset stomach or nausea can often lead to vomiting and diarrhea. When it does then the cause of the upset stomach is often a case of either mild to severe food poisoning or some type of viral infection or illness.

If you have a fever and the upset stomach continues for several days then you should consult your doctor. Make sure to drink plenty of fluids so that you don’t get dehydrated if you have diarrhea or are vomiting.

Natural Remedies for Upset Stomach:

If you know what is causing your upset stomach, say fumes from automobiles, some type of motion sickness, or overeating, remove yourself from the food, area of fumes, or the object in motion—as soon as possible and your stomach will settle soon.

If you can’t identify the cause there are many natural remedies that you can try for an upset stomach. These include:

  • Ginger Ale
  • Chamomile Tea
  • Peppermint Tea
  • Coke or one of the colas
  • Nibbling on soda crackers
  • Calcium antacids if you suspect heartburn

There are also many things that you should avoid if you have frequent upset stomachs as they have the ability to increase feelings of nausea. These include:

  • Cigarettes
  • Aspirin
  • Alcohol
  • Ibuprofen

Baking Soda:

One of the best home remedies for an upset stomach is baking soda. This is a great historic remedy for many types of stomach ailments and nausea. Just dissolve one teaspoon of baking soda in a cup of warm water and drink quickly.

This will often cause you to burp and get rid of some of the stomach upset. Baking soda typically soothes the stomach within 10-15 minutes. This home remedy can be repeated after three hours if stomach upset persists.
