Nail Fungus

A fungal nail infection can often take you by surprise, and once the fungus has spread the nails can be difficult to treat and are unsightly.

Although nail fungus is not usually painful, it can make things like wearing sandals and going to the beach a thing of the past.

It is best to treat the nail using natural cures or home remedies to kill off the fungus most importantly, but also to restore the appearance of the nails back to normal.

If you are interested in discovering how to get rid of nail fungus using natural cures, read more below.

Symptoms of Nail Fungus:

If you experience any of these symptoms, you may have a case of nail fungus:

  • White or yellow patches
  • Yellow horizontal stripes or bands on the nail
  • Nail becomes very thick
  • Splits may occur
  • Flaky, brittle texture of nail
  • Inflammation of the surrounding areas

Causes of Nail Fungus:

Fungal infections of the nails are caused by an overgrowth of fungal cells that live just under the nail bed.

This is caused by:

  • Humid or hot environments
  • Sweaty feet and damp socks
  • No ventilation in the shoes
  • Low immunity in the body due to illness or disease
  • Poor circulation
  • Bacteria-rich areas such as swimming pools and public showers

Natural Cures for Nail Fungus:

A variety of home remedies exist to treat nail fungus. Many times with fungal infections, you may have to try more than one natural cure to get results, but be diligent and you will find something that takes care of your problem.

Tea Tree Oil:

An excellent natural cure for anything fungus-related is to dab a few drops of tea tree oil on the affected area twice a day.

Tea tree oil is antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal, so a daily dose of this will keep nail fungus under control.

Listerine:

Listerine is a popular home remedy for nail fungus because it is a powerful antibacterial agent and it really does work.

Just soak the affected area for 20- 30 minutes a day.

This can take 3-4 weeks to work but be patient and soon enough you will have healthy nails again.

Vinegar:

Vinegar is another effective home remedy that kills nail fungus by creating an acidic environment in which the fungus cannot live.

Soak your feet in warm water and vinegar for 20 -30 minutes a day.

Again, this can take up to 4 weeks to fully clear the fungus.

Oregano:

Combine 3 drops of oregano essential oil with almond oil and apply to the nails twice a day to remove the fungal infection.

Keep Your Feet Dry:

Finally, to ensure that the fungus doesn’t come back, always wear cotton socks and keep your feet well-ventilated whenever possible.

It is also important to thoroughly dry them after the bath, after swimming, or after a workout.
