Motion sickness

Motion sickness is an ailment that can have a frustrating effect on our lives.

It is caused when the eyes, inner ear and body send different signals to the brain on what is happening to the body (this is usually during movement and travel), and as a result we lose our bearings and become ill.

Motion sickness prevents many people from enjoying travel in any form as well as amusement park rides. Since there is no cure for motion sickness, it is wise to utilize the many home remedies that exist to treat the condition and its symptoms.

In addition to feeling sick, motion sickness can also bring:

  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Vomiting that does not relieve the nausea
  • Pale skin or turning ‘green’
  • Sweating

Natural Cures for Motion Sickness:

If you are wondering how to remove motion sickness from your life, consider the following natural cures to treat the condition.

Focus:

When in the car or airplane, use eye focus as a natural cure to motion sickness.

By concentrating on an object in the direction that you are traveling, you can help to stabilize your vision and reduce sickness.

If you are on a train or bus with backwards-facing seats, do not sit in them as facing the opposite direction of travel can make the motion sickness increase.

Close Your Eyes:

Another home remedy for motion sickness is to simply close your eyes and take deep breaths.

Some people find this more effective if you rest your head on your knees or, if travelling on an airplane, on the fold-down tray in front of you.

Fresh Air:

One of nature’s most effective home remedies for nausea is fresh air.

Whenever possible, allow as much fresh air into the vehicle as possible to keep you feeling settled.

Sea Bands:

Sea bands are soft rubber bracelets that gently touch acupressure points in the wrist to reduce nausea.

This is a natural cure to motion sickness as it presses the acupressure point located in the middle of the wrist on the bottom of the arm (which is known to relieve nausea).

If you don’t have a sea band you can still get the benefits of this home remedy by gently pressing on the area with your finger when you feel a bout of motion sickness coming on.

Ginger Root Tea:

Sipping ginger root tea has been used for centuries to ease queasy stomachs and restore balance.

Many find that eating crystallized ginger works just as well.

Ginger Ale:

This fizzy drink can also help to calm motion sickness.

Drink one can with a squeeze of lime juice added if you feel nauseated, sipping it slowly or through a straw.

Avoid Greasy Foods:

If you are wondering how to get rid of motion sickness before it happens (ie. before you travel), then one of the best natural cures is to avoid greasy foods and caffeine for at least 6 hours before you travel.

Eat lightly, filling up on bread and crackers and drink plenty of water.
