Killing Fleas

A flea problem is a universal one and every household that has pets will find themselves affected sometime or the other.

Fleas are charming creatures which stick not only to your pets but also to every nook and corner of your lovely home.

Only about 5% of the fleas reside in your pet, the others sit cozy in your living room. A flea can lay as many as 60 eggs in a day.

Given their all-pervasive presence, waging a war against fleas is not as easy as you’d like to think.

However, there is hope yet! While killing fleas might not be easy, with a little commitment and effort you can manage to keep your home flea free while still enjoying your pet.

It is important to understand fleas should be killed simultaneously from both your house and your pet.

Disinfecting one without the other is futile as fleas grow very fast, and within a day all your efforts would become meaningless.

Natural Cures for Killing Fleas:

Vacuum your House:

Nothing works better to get rid of fleas than a thorough vacuuming of your house.

Vacuum every nook, corner and cranny you can find.

The vibrations of a vacuum cleaner get the fleas out of their cocoons, making it all the easier to get rid of them.

Shampoo your Pets:

Any shampoo when left on your pet for more than 10 minutes will effectively kill all fleas.

This is highly effective way of getting rid of fleas in animals. However shampoos work on fleas not on their eggs.

This process has to be repeated regularly for quite some time before you can declare your pet to be flea free.

Essential Oils for Dogs Only:

Mix any essential oil like rosemary, cedar etc. with a pint of water.

Spray this mixture on your dog to kill all fleas.

This method should not be used on cats as some essential oils are toxic for cats.

Borax/Earth Powder:

Borax powder can kill both the fleas and their eggs.

Sprinkle it lightly and keep it on the carpet for 2 to 3 days.

Vacuum your house thoroughly after 3 days and get a flea free house easily.

Tea Tree Oil:

Mix a quarter cup of vinegar, one quart of water and around 10 drops of tea tree oil.

This mixture should be sprayed lightly on all surfaces in order to disinfect them completely.

Citrus oil can also be used with water for making and effective disinfectant spray.
