Insomnia

Sleeping disorder is often referred to as insomnia. This is a symptom which is characterized by immense difficulty in falling asleep and in staying asleep.

There are three main types of sleep disorder:

  • Transient - This is generally caused due to sudden change in sleep patterns, environments or even due to severe stress. This can lead to impaired performance during the day and a general feeling of grogginess. It can last for a few weeks.
  • Acute - This can last up to six months and can adversely impact every part of an individual’s life.
  • Chronic disorder - This can last for several. A person suffering from it might have double vision, fainting spells and hallucinations and mental fatigue.

Frequent intake of drugs or antibiotics can lead to these sleep disorders.

Hormone shifts; especially those that happen just before menstruation or during menopause, can wreak havoc in your sleeping patterns.

Anxiety as well as over excitement can lead to insomnia.

Natural Cures for Insomnia:

Yoga:

There are several asanas such as shirasana, sarvangasana, uttasana, shavasana and vipritakarnim, which are very helpful in inducing sleep.

Yoga also helps in relaxing your body and reducing the overall stress, this is again very important for a person to get good sleep.

Poppy Seed Milk:

Mix about 30 grams of poppy seed milk with sugar. This mixture should be taken once a day, preferably after dinner. It can help our body to get rid of insomnia.

Nutmeg:

Grind 4 nutmegs into a fine powder and take this on a daily basis just before you go to sleep. This can be the magic mantra which could get you that 8 hours shut eye you always desired.

Exercises:

Exercising releases lactic acid in our body which induces lethargy and drowsiness. However, intense exercises should be restricted to the day time. Only mild exercises should be undertaken at night before going to sleep.

Ripe Banana:

Mix a mashed ripe banana with roasted cumin seeds. Take this delicious concoction just before going to sleep. This can really help in fighting sleep disorders.

Warm milk when taken before going to sleep can get you some quality shut eye. This can also be achieved by drinking orange juice or orange tea before sleeping for those lactose intolerant insomniacs out there.

A regular sleeping routine wherein you to sleep at the same time every night and wake up at the same time every morning will also go a long way in improving your sleep both in quantity and quality.
