HangoverAlcohol is known to cause various physical effects on your body and behavioral changes. Drinking alcohol within the daily recommended amount does not bring about its unhealthy effects. However, an individual who drinks too much alcohol to the point of intoxication often experiences a hangover. A hangover usually results in undesirable physical and mental symptoms, such as dizziness, increased sweating, headaches, fatigue, muscle aches, irritability, anxiety, nausea and vomiting. Dry mouth and blood shot eyes are also frequently reported. Natural Cures for a Hangover:Hangover symptoms typically subside after 8 to 24 hours. Although time is a natural cure for hangovers, there are many home remedies you can use to get rid of hangover symptoms. Water:Alcohol dehydrates your body, thus, it is important to increase your fluid intake. Drink a lot of water before going to bed and during the morning after. This is the most simple, yet one of the most effective home remedies to relieve the dehydrating effects of alcohol. Fresh Juice:Fresh juices hydrate and supply your body with much needed vitamins, minerals and electrolytes. A large glass of fresh orange juice or tomato juice will also help remove the alcohol from your system. Honey:Honey is a concentrated source of fructose, a simple sugar that aids your body in metabolizing the alcohol more quickly. It contains potassium, which can help counteract the effects of alcohol and decrease your craving for it. Take 2 to 6 teaspoons of honey every twenty minutes the morning after. Continue doing so until you feel much better. Take another 4 teaspoons with your first meal of the day. Banana:Bananas are one of the fastest natural cures for hangovers. Bananas calm the stomach. This fruit also supplies your body with magnesium and potassium, the minerals which are severely depleted with heavy drinking. Vitamin C:Studies show that Vitamin C aids in getting rid of alcohol from the body more quickly. Take 500 mg of Vitamin C or load up on foods rich in Vitamin C like strawberries, oranges and kiwifruits. Sleep:Good and adequate sleep will help your body regenerate the lost energy. Try to get a full night’s sleep if you have had too many alcoholic drinks. Preventive Measures:The best home remedy for a hangover is not to drink at all. If this is not possible, try drinking in moderation. Women may drink one glass of alcohol per day. Men can have two glasses of alcohol a day. It is also a good idea to have some food in your stomach as you drink. High protein foods are the best since they help slow the absorption of alcohol and provide the essential nutrients to counter the hangover symptoms. |
