Hair Loss

Hair loss is not a serious threat to health; however, it can cause low self-esteem and negative body image.

Alopecia, or loss of hair, may result from genetic predisposition, scarring of the scalp and systemic diseases, such as systemic lupus erythromatosus, thyroid disorders and pituitary insufficiency.

Severe infections, childbirth, major surgeries, severe emotional stress, a low-protein diet and certain medications can also cause hair loss.

Humans lose around 100 scalp hairs every day. Each hair can survive for 4 1/2 years. In its fifth year, the hair falls out and is replaced by a new hair within six months.

Hair loss is strongly associated to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which harms the hair follicles. DHT is a hormone derived from testosterone.

Male pattern baldness is the most common cause of hair loss in men and is genetically-influenced. The hair loss usually begins at the temples. Hairline recession and thinning around the crown usually occur.

Elevated adrenal androgen levels may cause hair loss in women, which usually begins in the second or third decade of life. Women report progressive thinning and loss of hair on the central part of the scalp.

Natural Cures for Hair Loss:

Well-Balanced Diet:

Healthy hair largely depends on a good diet, which is adequately supplied by essential nutrients.

Excessive hair loss is commonly seen in individuals deficient in Vitamin B6 and folic acid.

It is recommended to eat liberal amounts of beans, nuts, legumes, fish, meat and eggs to obtain adequate amounts of Vitamin B6.

Leafy green vegetables, fruits and dried beans are rich in folic acid.

Scalp Massage:

A daily 15-minute scalp massage is one of the most effective home remedies for hair loss.

Massage improves blood flow to the hair follicles, increasing the supply of nutrients needed for optimal hair growth.

Using your fingertips, begin by massaging the hairline area in a tight circular motion. Slowly work your way up to the base of skull.

Saw Palmetto:

Saw palmetto is a known natural cure for a enlarged prostate. However, in the past years, it has become one of the most popular home remedies for hair loss.

Saw palmetto inhibits the conversion of testosterone to DHT, which destroys the hair follicles and cause hair loss.

Saw palmetto may be ingested in pill form or it may be used to shampoo your hair.

Coconut Milk:

Coconut milk nourishes the hair and promotes hair growth.

Apply coconut milk on your scalp and perform a scalp massage for 15 minutes to get rid of hair loss.
