Gum diseaseGum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is the infection of the tissues and bones that support the teeth. It is estimated that around 80% of the total population has some form of the disease. Gum disease usually begins as gingivitis, a mild inflammation of the gums, which is characterized by swelling and reddening of the gum tissues. If left untreated, gingivitis may progress to periodontitis. Periodontitis is characterized by destruction of the bone that surrounds and holds the teeth in their place. Progressive destruction of the alveolar bone results in receding of gums, mobility of the teeth and tooth loss. Some studies show that periodontitis may cause the development of different chronic medical conditions, such as diabetes, obesity and arthritis. Gum disease is usually caused by the buildup of dental plaques on the surface of the teeth and beneath the gum line. Plaque is a sticky and colorless biofilm, containing the bacteria that normally thrive in the oral cavity. The bacteria produce toxins that stimulate the chronic inflammatory responses in the body, resulting in tissue irritation and damage. Thus, if plaques are not regularly removed, dental cavities and periodontal problems occur. Natural Cures for Gum Disease:Good Oral Hygiene:Consistent adherence to good oral hygiene is the best home remedy to get rid of gum disease. Regular and thorough brushing of the teeth, gums and tongue prevents the buildup of plaques that increase the risk of periodontitis, a severe form of gum disease, and tooth loss. Make use of fluoridated toothpaste and change your toothbrush every three months. Regular flossing, at least once a day, also prevents gum disease. Vitamin C:Vitamin C is a natural oxidant that removes free radicals, which damage the gum tissues. Vitamin C is also needed to repair and build strong connective tissues and to increase bone regeneration, increasing the healing of damaged gum tissues. Grapefruit, oranges, broccoli, cantaloupes, strawberries, kiwifruits and Brussels sprouts are rich in Vitamin C. Smokers are recommended to increase their intake of Vitamin C. Tea Tree Oil:Tea tree oil is one of the most effective and popular home remedies for gum disease. Tea tree oil relieves bleeding gums, gum recession and bad breath. It also contains antibiotic properties, which help in fighting the gum-disease causing bacteria. Add a few drops of tea tree oil to your toothbrush, and brush your teeth as you normally do. Tea tree oil gel toothpastes are also used as natural cures for gum disease. |
