Vervain

Species name:  Verbena Rigida Spreng.

Also known as: Wild Vebena, pigeon’s grass, devils medicine, herb of the cross, iron weed.

Vervain is known for its history of being associated with sorcery and magic. Both the Celtic and the Germanic people that lived in Europe used this herb in this manner. The Romans and Greeks also considered Vervain as sacred. They sometimes referred to this plant as Herba sacra or Herba veneris because of the magical properties they were thought to have. This plant grows wild throughout North America, Europe, China and Japan.

What is Vervain?: Vervain is a distinct herb that is recognized by its very small flowers which are a light lilac color. The leaves on this herb have jagged lobes and grow approximately three feet tall. It stems are thin and very stiff. This herb grows in pastures and likes lots of sunshine. It can often be found along the side of roads. It is a plant that can self sow so it grows continually although it has a short life span. Vervain constantly replenishes itself so it continues to reproduce. For this herb to be effective it needs to be picked before it begins to flower and has to be dried quickly.
