Goldenrod

Species Name: Oligoneuron.

Also known as: European goldenrod.

The parts of the goldenrod that are located above the ground are dried out and used for herbal remedies.

What is Goldenrod: Goldenrod is a member of the plant family Asteraceae. It is mostly found in meadows and pastures, but it can also be found in ditches and along roadsides.

It is found mostly in North America but can be found sparingly in Europe. Goldenrods probably got their name because they have golden inflorescence flowers and hundreds of little capitula.

The leaves on this herb have both smooth and jagged edges on the same plant. The goldenrod herbs have long thin stems that can grow up to seven feet high. Normally they do not have hairs but occasionally hairs can be found on the top part of the stem.

Goldenrods are often confused with similar plants that cause hay fever but the plant that normally is responsible for this pollen is called ragweed. One of the reasons these two are mistaken is because they bloom at the same time which is usually between the months of August and September.

A variety of insects pollinate the goldenrod because the pollen is too heavy to be blown around. Goldenrods often crossbreed with surrounding plants creating a large variety of plants in this species.
