Hawthorn Extract

Species Name: Crataegus

Also Known as: Thorn Apple

What is the Hawthorn? The Hawthorn is a thorny shrub of the rose family and encompasses a wide number of different plants within the species.

It typically grows in clusters of pink, white, or red with small berries growing after the flowers. Depending on the species, the leaves are shiny of various shapes and sizes.

There are three native species in the United States that are often used for food as well, including in the making of jellies.

For instance, Chinese Hawthorn is often used for food. If gathered in the spring while they are still tender, Hawthorn leaves are edible and make a delicious salad.

It has always been used as a symbol of hope and was often carried by the Ancient Greeks in wedding ceremonies.

Home Remedies Using Hawthorne Extract:

Benefits and Uses of Hawthorn Extract:

The Hawthorn leaves, flowers and berries have been used to treat angina, high blood pressure, as stated in a medical reference from the University of Maryland Medical Center, water retention, chronic heart failure and other heart related conditions.

It is said to help dilate the arteries and relax symptoms of chronic stress.

The Hawthorn contains several antioxidant flavonoids that help improve blood flow, dilate blood vessels and also safeguard the blood vessels from damage.

In an eight week study using almost 80 subjects, the use of Hawthorn was found to increase exercise tolerance when used daily.

The subjects were told to perform a set amount of exercise and regulated for intensity, length as well as for perceived exertion.

The test group were then given Hawthorn extract and evaluated once again and showed a larger increase in exercise tolerance including faster recovery periods and better oxygenation both during and after exercise.

Other uses for hawthorn extract include:

  • Control high blood pressure
  • Angina
  • Various heart problems
  • Control high cholesterol

Hawthorn extract is available in the following forms:

In the United States, Hawthorn can be bought without a prescription, however a doctor’s recommendation is needed in Europe where it is more strictly regulated.

There are a number of possible side effects that can be caused by using Hawthorn, including nausea, rapid heartbeat, fatigue, sweating, rash and headache.
