Goldenrod Extract

Species Name: Solidago

Also known as: Solidago Virgaurea, Aaron’s Rod, Wound Wort and Goldrute

What is Goldenrod Extract? Goldenrod has been used for well over 700 years.

It is considered to be an aquaretic, a substance which promotes the loss of water from the body both from increased urination and from sweating.

The plant is tall, with golden flowers, and is native to Europe and North America. Flowers are typically seen in the late summer months of July and August in most locations.

Home Remedies using Goldenrod Extract:

Benefits and Uses of Goldenrod Extract:

Goldenrod extract is often mixed with other ingredients when used as a gargle or as a tea because its own taste can be quite bitter and hard to swallow for most people.

The flavor can be masked with another, more pleasant tasting herb or by including a spoon of natural honey into the tea or gargle.

In a study at the University of Medicine in Budapest, Hungary, Goldenrod’s positive effects were seen in rats with induced periodontal disease.

Other studies have shown its effectiveness in dealing with the inflammation of the urinary tract, common during urinary tract infections. Goldenrod also reduces the inflammation of arthritis and the associated pain of the condition.

Goldenrod is used in a number of ways including as a gargle to care for the gums and inflammation in the mouth.

Goldenrod has been used as a treatment for urinary tract infection and to prevent kidney stones.

It also is useful for treating bladder inflammation, arthritis, allergies, colds and flu and laryngitis and other throat afflictions.

Goldenrod extract is available in the following forms:

  • Extract
  • Tea
  • Gargle
  • Tincture and liquid

It should be noted that the extract form is typically the only one that is standardized, that is, the only type that has the same strength each time - other forms can vary from preparation to preparation.

Side Effects of Goldenrod Extract:

Goldenrod is one of the first plants to produce pollen in the spring and is also a serious threat to those who have moderate to severe allergies.

It is ironic that goldenrod is used for the treatment of cold, flu and allergies when it itself causes allergic reactions as well.

It becomes increasingly allergenic later in the season as well. It should be used with caution in those who might be at risk for developing dehydration or those who already are dehydrated.
