Tart Cherry Juice

Species name: prunus cerasus.

Also known as: Sour cherry, pie cherry, tart cherry juice, montmorency cherry, balaton cherry.

Cherries are the smallest within the stone fruit family that includes plums, apricots, nectarines, and peaches.

Cherries are either sweet or tart.

Sweet varieties include Bing cherries, Lambert cherries, and Rainier cherries and are usually grown in Washington, Oregon and Idaho.

The tart variety includes the Montmorency and Balaton varieties that tend to be produced mostly in Michigan.

The sour cherries are credited with having the most beneficial health components and are the variety of which the most research has been conducted.

Cherries of all varieties have plenty of nutrients such as pectin, Vitamin C, and beta-carotene.

Sour cherries, on the other hand, have a great deal more Vitamin C than sweet cherries do.

Cherries are also abundant in flavonoids, especially anthocynins that are known to promote good health.

Anthocyanins are powerful antioxidants and have the ability to promote joint, cardiovascular, and overall health.

Tart cherries have high levels of proanthocyanins and anthocyanins.

Anthocyanins block COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes, which are instrumental in the production of prostaglandins, or inflammatory compounds. 

This is also how aspirin and non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as naproxen and ibuprofen work.

Both Balaton and Montmorency tart cherries contain high levels of melatonin with Montmorency cherries having six times more than Balaton cherries.

Melatonin is an antioxidant that is believed to assist in slowing the aging process, fighting jetlag, and promoting regular sleep habits.

Both sweet and tart cherries have anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
