Benefits and Uses of Acai Juice:

The acai berry is very rich in anthocianine, an antioxidant that works to combat free radicals and cholesterol.

It is also very rich in iron and fiber.

Acai is also very high in anthocyanins, a group of polyphenols that are very high in antioxidant values as well as giving the fruit its deep color.

The fruit also contains proanthocyanidins, another polyphenol group high in antioxidants.

Small amounts of Resveratrol are also present in acai.

The antioxidants present in acai work to combat several different types of free radicals according to recent studies.

Tests conducted show that a specific freeze-dried form of the acai fruit pulp is effective in inhibiting enzymes COX-1 and COX-2 with more effect on COX-1.

The enzymes are important in both acute and chronic inflammatory conditions and are targets in many of the anti-inflammatory medications.

In addition, lower concentrations of the pulp were stimulating to macrophages in vitro.

Macrophages are white blood cells that play an important role in the immune system.

Preliminary studies showed the potential for acai polyphenolics to reduce proliferation of leukemia cells, thus opening the need for more research into the possibility of its effectiveness as an anti-cancer agent.

Natives of Brazil have been using acai for many generations.

It has ten times more antioxidant benefits than grapes and twice that of blueberries.

Since many of the benefits suggested are only preliminary results, more tests will need to be performed in order to validate those results.

What has been done looks promising for the future, especially the abundance of antioxidants and polyphenols that are present in the acai berry.
