Sage

Also known as: Sage essential oil,  Salvia officinalis, garden sage, true sage, and Dalmatian sage.

Used since ancient times Sage was a valued herb of the Romans who created a ceremony around its harvesting. During the Middle Ages it was a well-known tonic, planted in the gardens of Charlemagne and used in dental hygiene.

Its scent was sought after and was used as a natural deodorizer for people, rooms and clothing.

Sage bundles were burnt in many Native American rituals to cleanse and purify surroundings.

Today it is still seen as an aid to drive out evil or unclean spirits, and is essential to many sacred ceremonies.

Sage essential oil can be extracted via steam distillation from a flowering perennial herb called Salvia officinalis.

One of many medicinal sage species, Salvia officinalis, although native to the Mediterranean, can be found world wide.

Home Remedies using Sage Essential Oil

Sage essential oil can be used in  aromatherapy with a simmer pot, vaporizer, or diffuser.

Blend sage with another essential oil like rose otto for a custom mix.

Using steam therapy just a drop or two of sage oil can be added to a warm bath.

Add to a carrier oil like jojoba for massage therapy.

Remember that is using sage essential oil less is more because it is so potent.

Benefits of Sage Essential Oil

The therapeutic properties of sage oil have been a valuable resource throughout history. It has a spicy and herbaceous scent that is said to combat mental fatigue and depression while supporting the nervous system.

It has been looked into in the study of Alzheimer's disease for its mental clarity and memory enhancement.

It stimulates the secretion of bile helping with the digestive system and can be used as a laxative.

Side Effects of Sage Essential Oil

Sage oil, although beneficial and therapeutic, contains thjuone which is toxic.

Sage oil is considered dangerous to use without the help of a trained aromatherapist or physician.

Pregnant or nursing women should avoid the use of sage.

Sage oil may cause convulsions when used in too high concentrations.

KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN. Sage oil should never be used on children.  It is an oral toxin. 

A possible alternative to sage oil, if you want some of the benefits without the risks, consider substituting clary sage oil.
