Rosemary

Also known as: Rosmarinus coronarium. Rosemary essential oil is extracted from Rosmarinus officinalis of the Labiatae family and is also known as incensier.

Rosemary comes from an evergreen bush native to Asia, but now cultivated in other places.  Pale blue and lavender hued flowers adorn the bush, and it is from them that the essential oil is extracted via steam distillation.

All the major ancient civilizations , the Egyptians, Hebrews, Greeks and Romans, considered rosemary sacred.  As late as the Middle Ages, rosemary was believed to both help users to keep from getting the plague and as a type of talisman to ward off evil.

It was widely burned in the form of incense in France during the plague. Rosemary oil is extracted from the fresh flowering tops by steam distillation.
