Nutmeg

Species name: Nutmeg oil is extracted from Myristica fragrans (also known as Myristica officinalis, M. oromata and Nux moschata) of the Myristicaceae family.

Also known as: Nutmeg is also known as jatiphala.

Nutmeg oil is sharp, and spicy.  Made from the fruit of an evergreen tree, nutmeg fruit resembles a small peach.  The oil is obtained from seed kernels.

Once a treatment for hemorrhoids, nutmeg is now used in cooking or to make toiletries, dental products, and candles.  Nutmeg oil is extracted from the seed kernels via steam distillation.

Essential oil of nutmeg is a warm spicy fragrance and used in aromatherapy for muscle pain, and inflammation.  It aids in digestion, is an aid for keeping the reproductive organs healthy, and helps dispel lethargy.

Nutmeg oil relieves pain, kills germs, stops muscle spasms, even those attributed to bowel problems and nausea and vomiting.  Nutmeg oil is a good laxative, promotes blood flow to the uterus, and is a stimulating tonic. 

Nutmeg oil is good for both circulation and the heart.  It is known to work well when substituted for smelling salts.

  • In vapor therapy, nutmeg oil can be used in a diffuser, oil ring, steam bath, or simmer pot.
  • Nutmeg oil can be used as a blended massage oil or diluted in bath water.

Nutmeg oil can be added to hair rinses.  Nutmeg is not normally a part of skin care, but it does relieve body aches and muscle pain, so it is good for those uses.

Side Effects of Nutmeg Essential Oil:

Nutmeg oil, in very large doses, may become toxic, induce nausea.  This oil should not be used during pregnancy.
