Lemon

Species name: Essential oil of Lemon, is extracted from the Citrus limonum (also called the Citrus Limon), of the Rutaceae family, and is extracted via cold press methods from the peel of the lemon.

Also known as: Lemon essential oil is also called cedro oil.

Lemon oil has that signature fresh, lemon scent.  The oil will be a very pale yellow, and may have a green hue.  It will be thin and water-like in texture.

Like other citrus fruit oils, lemon oil will go bad and must be replaced at least every ten months.  When used for aroma purposes, it can be used a bit longer, though.

Lemon oil was first brought to Europe in the middle ages.  It was very popular among sea goers, because it could be used to treat the vitamin deficiencies that caused health problems when at sea. 

A small dose of lemon could provide Vitamin A, B, and C, and prevent diseases such as scurvy.

  • Lemon oil can be mixed with other essential oils, added to a carrier oil, or a few drops may be added to bath water to revitalize, energize, and aid in digestion.  It helps fight infection and is a general tonic to aid in a variety of things such as weight loss.
  • Lemon oil can be added to creams and lotions to give them a great lemony scent and clear blocked pores. Lemon essential oil is also great to add to a healing wash for cuts, burns, and skin infections.
  • Mixed with large amounts of water, lemon oil is a good mouth rinse or gargle for canker sores in the mouth.

Side Effects of Lemon Essential Oil:

Essential lemon oil is not toxic, but it can irritate skin and sensitization may occur in some users.  Lemon oil is photosensitive and should not be used at all before being in the sun.
