Fennel

Species name: Fennel essential oil is also known as Foeniculum officinale, Foeniculum capillaceum, Foeniculum vulgaris, and Anethum foeniculum of the Umbelliferae (Apiaceae) family is steam distilled from a particular type of fennel called sweet fennel.

Fennel oil has a spicy scent.  The smell is very similar to aniseed and the essential oil is colorless.  Bees like fennel and are attracted to it, so it is good to aid in pollinating gardens. 

The ancient Chinese, believed it made users courageous and helped people live a long life. 

It was also believed to ward off spirits and ghosts. It was believed to improve eyesight.  It was also used to treat colic and to get rid of fleas.

Home Remedies using Fennel Essential Oil:

Fennel essential oil is used in aromatherapy.  It is believed to elicit bravery, and strengthen resolve. 

Fennel essential oil is also believed to be therapeutic for a plethora of digestive problems, is said to aid in promoting weight loss and preventing obesity, clearing oily skin, and preventing wrinkles.

Benefits of Fennel Essential Oil:

The therapeutic qualities of fennel oil are as an antiseptic for cleaning wounds, a digestive aid, to reduce edema, a laxative, to break up mucus so it could be expelled from the body, and as a tonic among other things.

Fennel oil is a remedy for digestive conditions like constipation, vomiting, and is even said to be effective in stopping hiccups.

It promotes a feeling of fullness, and acts as a diuretic, so is effective as a weight loss aid. It is a good skin cleanser.  Fennel oil helps fade bruises more quickly, fights wrinkles, and helps avert excessively oily skin.

Fennel oil has been used as a tonic to relieve symptoms of overindulgence of food or drinking.  It is also used for increasing lactation, but fresh fennel herb is said to show the best results.

  • In vapor therapy, fennel oil can be used in a simmer pot, oil diffuser, or heated on lamp rings to increase the appetite, or bolster resolve.
  • Fennel oil can be blended with other essential oils and/or carrier oils and used in massage therapy. 
  • It is good for stomach disorders and digestive problems, and has diuretic properties to relieve water retention.

Fennel essential oil can be used to help fade bruising, prevent wrinkling, and clearing skin problems, when it is added to a cream or lotion base.

Side Effects of Fennel Essential Oil:

Sweet fennel essential oil may have a narcotic type effect, and for that reason should not be used by pregnant or nursing women or epileptics.

It is not recommended for women with a history of hormone linked carcinoma or suffering from endometriosis.

Bitter fennel essential oil should not applied to the skin or used in aromatherapy.
