Angelica Root

Species name: Angelica archangelica.

Also known as: Angelica Root, A. officinalis, European angelica, "root of the Holy Spirit", "oil of angels".

Angelica root, from which angelica essential oil is made has scented edible stems and roots and can grow up to eight feet. Angelica root is thought to originate in Africa and has long been linked to the supernatural.

It was thought to be a blood purifier and a cure for mad dogs while at the same time used as a flavor for liqueurs and jams.

Supposedly it was told to humans by angels that it was in existence and could be used for healing purposes hence the name "root of the holy spirit."

Believed to possess both curative and restorative qualities, many experts think angelica root is comparable to the world of herbalism in the United States as ginseng is to herbalism in China.

The oil is steam extracted from the roots, seed and rhizome. The fragrance is woody, peppery and musky. It works well with clary sage and patchouli.
